Inaugurating CINV

In april 2009 the Centro de Neurociencia de Valparaíso (CNV), founded in 1999, became the Centro Interdisciplinario de Neurociencia de Valparaíso (CINV). CINV is a non-profit private corporation. Its board is formed by its senior scientists who elect the Director of the Center, presently Professor Ramon Latorre.

The CINV is being created to incorporate the CNV into a multidisciplinary, interregional science center with heightened impact on Chilean society and economy. The mission of the CINV will be to combine top-level research and the formation of highly trained personnel, with the transfer of scientific knowledge from the laboratory into society. To that end, the CINV will further develop its national and international collaborative networks and establish joint ventures with private businesses to increase the impact of its translational research.

During 2008, a Max Planck fact-finding-mission composed of the Vice President of the Max Planck Society and several Institute Directors was arranged. During this Max Planck “Fact Finding Mission” it was agreed that in order to consolidate potential collaborations and exchange, the first activity will be to organize a Symposium at the beginning of 2010, organized by CINV and supported by CONICYT, the University of Valparaíso and the Max Planck Institutes. The meeting is now a reality and Chilean Science will meet the Max Planck Institutes from January 11 to 13, 2010. This meeting will focus on Neuroscience and Nanotechnology and will serve as a launching platform to establish strong scientific ties in the form of collaborations, and exchange of scientists between the Max Planck Society and Chilean scientists.
