DIRECTOR, LATIN AMERICA PROGRAM

Founded in 1895 as the New York Zoological Society 

SUMMARY: The Director of the Latin America Program promotes biological conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean through overseeing a large number of Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) field projects in 17 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. S/he establishes program priorities, develops strategic approaches, and coordinates financial and administrative support to the field. Additionally s/he coordinates with the other WCS programs and with other national and international organizations. Finaly s/he promotes biological conservation in Latin America among national governments, international agencies, and other non-governmental organizations; directs international attention to important sites for conservation; and influences policies that promote conservation. 
The position is based at the WCS headquarters in New York City. Salary
level commensurate with experience. 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 
1. Work with field staff to establish program priorities, strategies and approaches. Identify conservation needs within the region; establish new programs and country initiatives when appropriate; and evaluate direction 
and success of regional programs. 
2. Oversee and administer the WCS Latin America Program in tropical South America temperate South America, Meso America and the Caribbean. 
3. Provide guidance to project development and implementation and maintain regular contact and feedback with field staff. Assist field staff in their programs through site visits and direction on collection, analysis and publication of field data. 
4. Maintain significant involvement in the raising of financial support for projects, in collaboration with WCS development staff and field staff. 
Develop proposals and participate in fund-raising activities; identify new funding sources; and maintain contact and reporting with funding sources. 
5. Coordinate communication within the Latin America Program as well as with other WCS International programs, zoo-based programs , executive staff and trustees. 
6. Promote WCS and biological conservation in Latin America with host country governments, donors, and non-governmental organizations through meetings, interviews, and writing. 
7. Develop and publish on personal research and conservation programs that promote conservation in Latin America. Represent the Program and WCS at national and international fora. 
8. Contribute to, enlarge, and uphold WCS s policies on Equal employment Opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS: 
1. An earned doctorate in a field related to the conservation of biological diversity. 
2. A minimum of 5 years experience in the management of conservation programs in Latin America. 
3. Extensive experience in program development and fund-raising including experience with bilateral and multilateral funding organizations.
4. Experience in conducting and analyzing research and in writing and publishing. 
5. Complete fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish with a preference for command of Portuguese as well. 
6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work well in cross-cultural situations with a wide range of people. 
7. A willingness to travel extensively (30-40% of the time). 
8. Support for the mission of the Wildlife Conservation Society.
